Description of competencies
Occupation and the Training Process (15 H)
In this course students evaluate their interest in the training program and the profession by participating in role-playing activities covering the following areas:
- The nature of the occupation and the education plan.
- The structure of the healthcare system and related organizations.
- Confirmation of their career choice.
General and Cellular Terminology (45 H)
To demonstrate the required competency, students must transcribe texts containing general medical terminology and the terminology of cellular activity under these conditions:
- Source materials: a recorded dictation of about two typed, double-spaced pages containing about 50 different medical terms.
- Tools: a personal computer, dictation/transcription software, word-processing software, the CPS, a medical dictionary, an English dictionary and an English grammar.
- Without class notes.
Patient Visits (30 H)
To demonstrate the required competency, students must perform tasks related to patient visits under these conditions:
- Source materials: written case studies covering the greeting and follow-up of patients with various types of health problems.
- Tools: a personal computer with medical record-keeping and scheduling software, legal texts on medical issues, various medical-file documents and forms, a medical dictionary and the CPS.
- Without class notes.
Movement and the Nervous System (30 H)
To demonstrate the required competency, students must transcribe texts containing terminology related to movement and the nervous system under these conditions:
- Source materials: two medical documents, each approximately two typed, double-spaced pages, tape-recorded, and containing a total of about 50 different terms related to movement and the nervous system.
- Additional source: a recording containing background noises and dictated by doctors in a real healthcare
- Tools: dictation/transcription software, a personal computer, the CPS and a medical dictionary.
- Without class notes.
Medical Supplies (15 H)
To demonstrate the required competency, students must carry out activities related to the management of medical supplies under these conditions:
- Source materials: Based on an inventory context and the handling of medical supplies, a simulated situation for handling hazardous materials, a simulation of the danger of contamination by biomedical waste.
- Tools: order forms, medical supplies and empty hazardous materials containers.
Entering the work force - Internship (75 H)
Prepare to enter the workforce while meeting professional standards by participating in workplace learning activities covering:
- Familiarization with the work done in a healthcare
- Performance of typical medical secretary tasks.
- Review their training in relation to the requirements of the occupation.
Human Biology (30 H)
To demonstrate the required competency, students must transcribe texts containing general human biology terms under the following conditions:
- Source materials: a manuscript of about three pages, containing approximately 50 different general biology terms, including usage and spelling difficulties in terms related to anatomy, pharmacology and diagnostic methods.
- Tools: without class notes, but with a medical dictionary, a CPS (Centrale des professionnelles et professionels de la santé) atlas of anatomy, an English dictionary, an English grammar, a personal computer and word-processing software.
Interpersonal Relations (30 H)
Develop workplace interaction skills that meet professional standards by taking part in role-playing activities covering:
- Awareness of the importance of professional ethics and the quality of interpersonal relations.
- Applied interpersonal-relationship and stress-management techniques appropriate to the workplace.
- Awareness of the student’s strengths and limitations in their ways of interacting in the workplace.
Functions of the Human Body (75 H)
To demonstrate the required competency, students must transcribe texts containing terminology related to the functions of the human body under these conditions:
- Source material: two medical documents, each approximately two typed, double-spaced pages, tape-recorded, and containing a total of about 75 different terms related to the functions of the human body.
- Additional source: recordings containing background noises and dictated in a variable tone and pace.
- Tools: a personal computer, dictation/transcription software, word-processing software, the CPS, a medical dictionary, an English dictionary and an English grammar.
- Without class notes.
Medical Documents (75 H)
To demonstrate the required competency, students must produce documents of a medical nature under these conditions:
- Source materials: recorded texts of three different medical documents, on recordings containing background noises and dictated by doctors in a real healthcare
- Tools: a personal computer, dictation/transcription software, word-processing software, the CPS, a medical dictionary, an English dictionary, an English grammar and legal texts related to the medical field.
- Without class notes.
Accounting Tasks (30 H)
To demonstrate the required competency, students must carry out accounting tasks related to medical services:
- Prepare paper and electronic billing forms for medical services.
- Make proper use of various records of medical services performed by different doctors. Tools: a personal computer, a general practitioner’s manual, a specialist’s manual, a directory of diagnoses, the CPS and a medical dictionary.
Requirements
To be eligible for admission to the Secretarial Studies in a Medical Environment program, candidates must meet one of the following requirements:
Hold a DEP in secretarial studies
OR
Have completed recognized equivalent learning.
OR
Be already engaged in a trade or profession related to that program of study.
